A universal narrative of growing up and becoming an adult in challenging circumstances. Józek, a deserter from the tsarist army who joins the forming Legions, an intelligence agent for the I Brigade and Women's Leage member-Ola, and Tadek, her betrothed, a member of the Shooting Team, form the backdrop for the love story unfolding in the foreground. Many historical personalities appear in the film, in addition to fictional characters whose stories are based on the histories of genuine legionnaires. Brigadier Józef Pilsudski, Lieutenant Stanislaw Kaszubski, alias "King," and a number of others were among them. The film follows the Legion's fighting track from 1914 to1916, from Oleandry to the Battle of Kosciuchnowka, and depicts the most dramatic scenes from the legionary epic, including the famed uhlan attack at Rokitna, which is one of the most spectacular scenes in the film.
